Marginalized Voices: History of the US

This course will examine social, economic, and political developments in American history from the settlement of the colonies to the War on Terror. A primary focus of these explorations is to make visible those whose voices are often silent in mainstream textbooks such as women, African Americans, Native Americans, immigrants, and workers. Analysis of primary sources (e.g. letters, speeches, images, and maps) will push students to think critically about how history is written and how historical events are remembered. Students will also learn how to write a research paper, present research findings, and engage in debate on topics of note in U.S. history. Examination of historical and literary manuscripts specific to different periods in U.S. history will reveal for students the interdisciplinary nature of history.
