Chinese - Advanced

Fourth-year Chinese is an advanced course in which students use a wide variety of text and audio-visual materials to enhance their learning of Chinese language as well as traditional and modern Chinese culture. The class is conducted entirely in Chinese and students are expected to speak frequently with others, express opinions, present arguments, make historical and cultural comparisons, producing non-rehearsed responses to the topics, text, pictures or video under discussion. Students continue to acquire vocabulary, characters, and advanced grammar structures, and to sharpen listening, speaking and composition skills. Extensive reading assignments improve students' reading ability, while broadening their knowledge of Chinese culture. Students research and write essays or create presentations on a variety of topics such as environment, healthy lifestyle, gender equality, urban-rural differences, money management, travel, social media, as well as other subjects which interest them.
