Introduction to Quantum Computing

Introduction to Quantum Computing is an advanced course preparing students for this rapidly growing area that endeavors to leverage quantum theory to perform computations exponentially faster than classical means. This course will build on the foundational aspects of quantum theory covered in Modern Physics (UP070). Background topics in mathematics and computation will be introduced in parallel with the exploration of quantum algorithms. Sundry relevant topics will be discussed as well, including physical implementations, history of QC, companies and labs exploring QC, and recent advances. Aspects of set theory, group theory, number theory, linear algebra, probability and statistics will be utilized in this course. It has been recognized that there is a great need for researchers and workers skilled in quantum technologies and information, what has been called a future "quantum workforce." The successful student in UP135 will be able to comprehend current research and explore quantum algorithms on their own, ready to join this future workforce.
